The proposal must include information about the summer program of study the student wishes to attend, her rationale for this choice, her goals for the experience, and what she hopes to bring back to Scripps from the experience. The selection process involves the submission of a detailed proposal by each applicant, which is reviewed by the full time members of the dance faculty. Each applicant must be a Scripps sophomore or junior who is an active participant in the Scripps Dance Program, although she need not be a dance major. The Lucile Morrison Dance Award became an annual award given to one or more Scripps Dance students to provide financial support for summer dance/movement study. Study with outstanding creative professionals in the field was an opportunity for broadening the student’s horizons. The purpose for establishing such a scholarship was to encourage an interest in modern dance, particularly for those Scripps students who had found dance to be a vital part of their educational and creative growth. Such a student might be a beginner who had shown potential ability, or a more advanced student who aspires to a professional career in dance. The Lucile Phillips Morrison Award was founded in 1946-47 to provide an honorarium for a Scripps dance student whose enthusiasm for and interest in modern dance warranted encouragement.
